You are not alone, if you thought that being healthy simply meant the absence of illness or disease. So, you go to the doctor, provide an update of your health history and discuss any physical symptoms that you are experiencing. Your vital signs might be good, then you step on the scale… Both you and the person in the room know that the weight which appears on the scale, is not “healthy” for your height. Your blood work may indicate areas that require further attention or adjustments to your lifestyle. If nothing is at the level of a chronic illness, you might be advised to pay attention to your diet and try to exercise. If diagnosed with a chronic disease, like diabetes or heart disease, you will most likely be prescribed medication. Then, you are out the door and back to life as you have lived it.
I believe that most doctors genuinely care about their patients and have good intentions, but the system in which they work generally allows them time to diagnose and treat the illness, instead of getting to the root cause. Prescribed medication is usually a temporary solution.
Getting to the root cause of the disease, requires looking beyond the symptoms. Our health is interconnected (physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually). For example, someone might have diabetes because of physical health (nutrition and exercise), but the lack of exercise and poor eating habits could be due to issues with emotional health, mental health or spiritual health.
Holistic Health considers the whole person and overall well-being. The connection between mind, body and spirit.
